Ruby was named after ruber, latin word for red. A ruby is a pinkish red to blood-red colored gem-quality mineral corundum, originally a gemstone from India. Ruby was named the King of Gems because of its intense color and attributes. First found for over two thousand years, Ruby is also found in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and some Southeast Asian and African countries.

Color, Shades, and Varieties

Rubies and sapphire are both defined as corundum. The presence of a large amount of chromium is what makes a corundum gemstone red. All other varieties of corundum, anything not red, are classified as sapphire. In conclusion, rubies are red sapphires. These gemstones rank 9th on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness after diamonds.


As mentioned, Rubies come from different origins of the world and can be categorized based on where they originate. Burmese rubies have one of the deepest red-colored mineral corundum. With a slightly darker hue, Thai rubies are secondary consideration to the Burmese sibling. Differently, African rubies are one of the most demanded rubies that, generally, expose a purplish or dark red color. These countries are yet another contender in the ruby market.
