Jaipur: The Capital City of Gems

Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan in India, otherwise known as the "Pink City." The city of Jaipur is known for its handmade goods and gemstones. Gemstone production in Jaipur can be attributed to the efforts of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and his significant contributions to the gem industry in Jaipur.

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II founded Jaipur in the year 1727, which later brought economic prosperity to the region through his encouragement of jewelers around India to congregate their artisanal shops in Jaipur.

Johari Bazaar

Johari Bazaar one of the oldest local markets in Jaipur is one example of how Jai Singh II, focused on the growth of the jewelry industry. The market became the beginning of the enormous industry in Jaipur and has successfully adapted to the growth of modernization. It is fair to say that the city is one of the few pioneers in colored stone cutting and trading in the modern manufacturing industry.

The Jewelry Industry

The city has now become the jewelry capital of the world, facilitating jewelry designers, skillful artisans, and manufacturers in global trading with its distribution centers. Jaipur is now one of the gemstones centers with all types and colors of gemstones collections, including imported gemstones from all over the world. Aside from that, Jaipur is also known for establishing commercial mining and trading of natural stones.

In 1966, the Gems and Jewelry Export and Promotions Council (GJEPC) was formed under the Ministry of Commerce to promote the Indian gem. Approximately 6,000 exporters gather to contribute US$28 million worth of exports by the first year of operation. The value keeps increasing year by year. In between April 2014 and March 2015, Jaipur's gem and jewelry exports were reported to reach US$574 million, with colored stone being the biggest contributor (US$264 million).

Today, alongside other luxury manufacturing goods, tourism, and information technology, the city still heavily depends on the jewelry industry as its primary economic support.
